Jim grew up in the Kent valley. After a fun-filled year at college he
joined the U.S. Air Force in 1968 where he learned Russian. He and his
bride, Jane lived in England for almost two years and then he finished
his enlistment alone at a remote site in Turkey. After discharge from
Active Duty he joined the Air Force Reserve and began attending the
University of Washington receiving a degree in Slavic Languages in 1975.
After the birth of their first son Jim and Jane moved to Maryland where
Jim worked for the National Security Agency at Ft. Meade. In 1978 the
family (add one more son) moved to work in West Berlin where Jim was an
advisor to the US Army and US Air Force for five years.
Life on the East Coast was an experience but did not offer what the
family (add one daughter born in West Berlin) had expected. In 1986 Jim
resigned from government work and moved to Kitsap County. Jim became a
real estate agent and Jane returned to her profession as an educator.
During the First Gulf War Jim, now a commissioned officer in the US
Air Force Reserve, was on active duty in Japan. Upon return he assumed
management of his parents in-law’s manufactured housing community and
rental properties. For 11 years Jim was involved in the problems
associated with mobile home maintenance, low-income housing, on-site
sewage systems and water quality management. Jim has been on an extended
sabbatical since 2002 working on various projects, volunteering for
schools, and supporting his school administrator wife.
Jim has a Master’s Degree in Business Administration from Boston
University and retired from Air Force Reserve as a Major in 1995. He has
been active with the Kitsap Unitarian Universalist Fellowship serving on
the Board of Administrators, President Board, and on various committees.
He has also served on the boards of the Manufactured Housing Communities
of Washington and Central Kitsap Soccer Club and was a Toastmaster for
several years. He is currently the President of his neighborhood
association and has been on this board for too many, many years.
Jim worked on the Howard Dean campaign, was appointed a PCO in the
35thLD, and has made phone calls and walked neighborhoods for Kitsap
County Commissioner race, the NO on I_933 campaign, and for
school levies. He regularly attends Democratic dinners and fundraisers
where his wife buys items they do not need. |

Voting for Democrats was my basic political activity until being
recruited to phone for the Bonker campaign in the 3rd Congressional oh
those many years ago. From there I became active in the political action
committee of Chinook UniServ Council which is a regional service
provider of the Washington Education Association. I have remained active
on that committee working on a variety of campaigns over the years. When
my husband decided not to run for PCO of Elma 2, I put my name on the
ballot and have serve in that capacity. For a number of years I served
on the banquet/auction committee of the Grays Harbor Democrats. In the
late 1990’s, a friend in Mason County talked me in to co-chairing the
35th District Democrats which I did and produced the Quad-County
Clarion, the meeting notice, during that time. Currently I serve as
the secretary of the 35th District Democrats. |

From standing on street corners waving signs on Election Day as a young
boy, to recently managing a legislative campaign, the Democratic Party
has been a large part of my life. What started as tagging along with my
parents has turned into a passion for progressive change, and now leads
me here today asking for your support as 35th District State
Committeeman. I grew up in Shelton, graduated from Shelton High School
and South Puget Sound Community College in 2002, and attended the
University of Washington and graduated in 2005 with a BA in Political
Science. During my senior year at UW, I interned with the State Party in
their main office. I worked for the Executive Director, and was tasked
with numerous individual projects like maintain a database of every PCO
candidate in the state, as well as assisting the other departments in
the office. I worked with the press office of the Gregoire/Murray
campaigns as well, helping organize rallies and helped with opposition
research.
For this election cycle, I managed Mike Rechner’s campaign for the
House in the 20th District, against minority leader Richard DeBolt, of
fake sex offender postcard fame. In this very conservative district we
gained a lot of ground in the results, and while unfortunately not
enough to win in 2006, we’re laying the groundwork for another run in
2008 to build on the progress we made this year. Also this year I helped
with my father’s campaign for Mason County Commissioner, and helped
return a Democratic majority to the Mason County Commission.
For the last few years, my father served as Mason County’s State
Committeeman, and in instances where he could not attend the meetings, I
would serve as his proxy. I know how the meetings are run and know how
we can voice our concerns to the state-wide body when times arise for
such action. I served on the Rules Committee for this year’s state
convention as well.
I look forward to representing our district on the state level for
the next few years. I’m excited about having this opportunity, and want
to make sure we have a strong voice on the committee. |
