The 35th LD says, "With compact fluorescents, we can help change the world, one bulb at a time!"

At their January meeting, members of the 35th LD agreed to look into ways to promote the use of compact fluorescent (CFL) bulbs and to seek free and reduced-cost CF bulbs to distribute within the legislative district.

Did you know the energy used in the average home can be responsible for more than twice the greenhouse gas emissions of the average car? When you use less energy at home, you reduce greenhouse gas emissions from power plants and help protect our environment from the risks of global climate change.

The story doesn't end with greenhouse gases, however. In addition to releasing carbon dioxide, coal-fired power plants also release the following:

Sulfur Dioxide - the main cause of acid rain
Nitrogen Oxide - causes smog and acid rain
Radioactive pollutants - in fact a coal-fired power plant can release more radioactive pollutants than a properly functioning nuclear power plant

The CFL bulbs available today are far superior to those of just a few years ago. A CFL can now produce strong, unwavering light from a quiet bulb that fits into most lamps. They also use so little power, when compared to conventional bulbs, they can pay for themselves in a matter of months.

In the following months, you'll hear more about CFL bulbs from the 35th LD. Until then, visit these web sites for more information:

"How Many Lightbulbs Does it Take to Change the World? One. And You're Looking At It." Fast Company, September, 2006.

"If every American home replaced just one light bulb with an ENERGY STAR, we would save enough energy to light more than 2.5 million homes for a year and prevent greenhouse gases equivalent to the emissions of nearly 800,000 cars." Energy Star CFL web page.
